Oqaatsut is a small settlement with approx. 40 inhabitants, situated 21 km to the north-west of thetown of Ilulissat. It has a restaurant and 2 hotels.

Village life in Oqaatsut is about sustaining a small community that loves to be close to the sea. The few houses are scattered across the rocky terrain yet never very far from the harbor. Out here in this roadless village, cars are useless so fishing boats become the main mode of transport, while in winter snowmobiles and sleddogs are the most prized possessions. Our tour to Oqaatsut is your opportunity to experience the heartbeat of village culture here in Greenland.

Difficulty – Medium.

Frozen Fjord

The icefjord is a UNESCO world heritage site. Sometimes we will follow an ancient dogsled route through stunningly beautiful backcountry landscape. This route has been used since ancient times to transport halibut by dogsleds to Ilulissat during the winter, when all coastal seawater is frozen around the city.

Tour description

It takes about 1 hour and 30 min by snowmobile to get to the frozen icefjord. We will ride to approx. 300m altitude, from there you can clearly see the “Dead Glacier” if the sun shines.  We will leave the snowmobiles near the fjord and walk for 1 hour on the frozen fjord to icebergs frozen in the sea ice. You can take incredible pictures of these icebergs close up and meet the sleddogs that carry fish from the fjord to the town. You will see the huts where fishermen spend the night before they go fishing on the frozen ice of the fjord. Warm drinks and some cookies will be served during the tour.
